1. You are standing on a railway platform. The only other passenger is a woman, sitting on a bench, crying. Ignore her - not your problem. Leave her alone - if she wants your help she'll ask for it. Sit next to her and ask what's wrong. Leave her alone - you don't want to upset her more.

2. You go to a party where everyone seems to know everyone else, and no one is talking to you. Study the groups, identifying which one looks best for you, and go and join it. Grab a bottle of vodka, go up to the nearest group, and ask them if they've ever played Drunk Jenga. Go home. Use your phone to take an online personality test, to work out why no one will talk to you.

3. You are approached in the street by a reality TV show host, with his camera crew, and offered £10,000 to punch him in the face. Shake your head and walk away - it's just not dignified. Punch him. Refuse - you're not going to hurt someone for entertainment. Say you need to know more about why they're doing this, and what the legal consequences might be, before you'll consider it.

4. Your are asked by your Head of Department to create a new company slogan. You know that if it's good she'll take the credit - and if no one likes it she'll blame you. Produce the perfect slogan - then quietly grind your teeth as she gets praised for it. Do as she asks - it's enough that she knows you've done a good job. Produce a brilliant slogan - and send it directly to the owner of the company. Get the intern to do it, and send it to you boss without bothering to read it.

5. You and your partner are about to board a twelve hour flight, when you're told it's been overbooked, and you've been upgraded. Behind you in the queue is a stressed-out mother with a noisy toddler. You barely notice them - and take the upgrade. Offer them the upgrade - they need it more than you do. Secretly want to offer them the upgrade, but worry that the toddler will annoy the first-class passengers. You take it, but feel guilty for the entire flight. Take the upgrade - even if you decline it, the airline won't give it to a mother with a noisy toddler.

6. In the middle of a romantic dinner, your partner admits that they've been having an affair for the last six months. Mentally calculate what assets you would get in a divorce - and base your reaction on the result. Laugh, and offer to compare the number of affairs you've had - to see who's more attractive. Burst into tears - then question them to try to understand what you did wrong that led to this. Shake your head and walk out - loyalty is more important than anything.

7. You are on the train, when a nearby passenger starts talking noisily into his phone - discussing the takeover of a business that you know. Walk over and warn him he's being indiscreet. Put your earphones in - it's nothing to do with you. Take notes - this could be your route to early retirement. Want to warn him - but you don't like confrontation, so you leave the carriage at the next stop, pretending that's where you get off.

8. You are a witness in a case on which your company's future depends. In court, you are asked a question which you know will lose the case if you answer honestly. Tell the truth - just to see the expression on your boss's face when he knows he's lost his job. Tell the truth - because you never lie about anything. Lie - you don't want to be the reason that hundreds of employees lose their jobs. Agonise so long that the Judge tells you to answer - then tell the truth because the risks of being caught out lying are just too great.
